Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for people aged 16 to 64 with a long-term health condition or disability. It is gradually replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA), except for children under 16.

The time between making the initial claim and getting a decision on PIP entitlement was expected to be about 12 to 15 weeks.

Oldham CAB noticed that claims for PIP were taking longer than expected. The actual time to get a decision on a claim depends on individual circumstances. In some cases it can take about 21 to 26 weeks.

Our clients have experienced up to 10 months wait which can be extremely detrimental to a client with health conditions causing stress and worry.

What did we do?

We presented our findings to the local MPs and completed evidence forms to sent to Citizens Advice. We will continue to collate evidence and present this to make positive changes to this process.
